Edinburgh Fruitmarket Gallery: William Kentridge and Vivienne Koorland

During February I visited the Fruitmarket gallery in Edinburgh. On display was the work on William Kentridge and Vivienne Koorland. Vivienne Koorland (b. 1957) is a South African artist who's paintings explore painting and illustration based on her experiences growing up in South Africa. Her large scale peices on display were made from burlap, with paint, chalk, ink and other materials and textiles worked into them. (displayed below) I personally found these earthy looking works very interesting and it has prompted me to think about how I could stretch other materials beside traditional canvas to paint on, and work with earthier, more neutral tones when creating abstract images.

William Kentridge (b.1955) is a south African art who's work I saw mainly focused on illustration and animation. From figures running and dancing across animated book pages to still nudes painted onto torn books. His work I also found interesting and has prompted me to think about how I can use illustration within my work, specifically when exploring portraiture as a side project to my main abstract work.
