Willem de Kooning
One of the pieces which has most informed my current abstract painting process is ‘Whose Name Was Writ in Water’ (1975), shown below by de Kooning. In this piece you can see clearly how he uses flowing line and thick impasto to create motion and texture. Also creating contrast through his use of earthier tones interacting with intense reds and blues. Overall creating a work with depth, fluidity and a very ‘painterly’ feel. These ideas have all been taken into consideration when making my own work in order to create abstract work which is more visually effective.
